Papal Palace of Castel Gandolfo and the “Castelli Romani”

This visit of the Papal Palace of Castel Gandolfo is a 4 hours tour by car in the neighbourhood of Rome. It is designed to be a sort of Sunday outing in the celebrated area of “Castelli Romani”, 27 villages upon hills, 25 km south of Rome. But the focus of the tour is the visit of the apostolic Palace of Castel Gandolfo. Pope Francis, in fact, has recently open the treasures of his summer residence after 400 years of private use.

Castel Gandolfo and the “Castelli Romani”: Program of the visit

The tour will take us first trough some of the villages of “Castelli Romani” such as Frascati and Monte Cavo. We will stop often, during the trip to admire the landscape and the magnificent views upon Rome. One of the stops will be in Nemi. Where we will take a walk in the heart of the village to admire its volcanic lake.

Then, we join Castel Gandolfo driving through Genzano, Ariccia and Albano. Once there, the driver will leave us in front of the city entrance. Few steps away and we’ll be at the Apostolic Palace of Castel Gandolfo for the visit.

The visit will start by the museum at the 1st floor and, after this, we’ll move to the 2nd floor where the private apartments of Popes are. The decorations there, are absolutely the original ones with the original furniture, we never know Pope Francis might come back! The Swiss guard room, the throne room, the personal study and the private bedroom of John Paul II and Benedict XVI will also be part of the visit.
